The week the model kept saying ‘great company, wrong price’

Weekly Digest
Week of August 24-30, 2026

This week’s coverage kept circling the same tension: the businesses that scored highest on Quality and Growth were almost all trading near their two-year highs, so the model’s Opportunity pillar dragged them to Hold. NVIDIA (Quality 98/100), Alphabet (88/100) and Amphenol (80/100) each cleared the bar on business quality but scored 31 or lower on entry timing. The exceptions were instructive – Taiwan Semiconductor and Micron rated Buy because their quality scores (95 and 93) were high enough to absorb a premium, while Salesforce landed a Buy the honest way, with an Opportunity score of 68 to sit alongside its 74 Quality. On the other side of the ledger, the model issued Sell on Beam Therapeutics, Recursion and Opendoor, where trailing revenue is shrinking by 44% to 94% year over year.

This Week’s Highlights

Salesforce: the rare cheap-quality Buy, and the tape noticed

Salesforce was the only large-cap name we covered this week to score above 65 on all three pillars – Quality 74, Growth 69, Opportunity 68 – for a Recommendation score of 70 and a Buy signal. As its headline put it, the company turned $43.9 billion of revenue into $17.7 billion of free cash flow over the trailing twelve months, and the stock trades near the middle of its two-year range rather than at the top. Over the past week or so it was also the watchlist’s biggest gainer, up 22.7%.

Why It Matters

Most of this week’s high-quality names were priced for perfection; Salesforce showed what it looks like when a strong business is still available at a reasonable multiple. The move also shows how quickly the market can close that gap once it notices.

NVIDIA scores 98 on Quality and still cannot clear Hold

NVIDIA posted the highest Quality score we recorded this week at 98/100, with a Growth score of 89, yet an Opportunity score of 23 pulled the model to Hold. Alphabet (Quality 88, Opportunity 31) and Amphenol (Quality 80, Opportunity 25) told the same story – elite fundamentals, entry-timing scores in the bottom third, each stock trading near its two-year high.

Why It Matters

The Buy/Hold/Sell signal is not a verdict on the business – it weighs valuation and price position alongside quality. A cluster of Holds on expensive leaders is the model flagging that a lot of good news is already in the price.

Beam Therapeutics climbs toward its two-year high as revenue falls 94%

Beam Therapeutics scored 24 on Quality, 23 on Growth and 20 on Opportunity – a Recommendation score of 22 and a Sell signal – after trailing-twelve-month revenue dropped 94.2%. The share price, meanwhile, has been moving toward the top of its two-year range.

Why It Matters

It is a clean example of price and fundamentals pointing in opposite directions. When a stock rises while its revenue base collapses, the model leans on the financial data rather than the chart.

Signal Changes This Week: RGTI (Sell → Hold)

One rating changed this week: Rigetti Computing (RGTI) moved from Sell to Hold. The shift tracked broad improvement across the model’s inputs rather than any single figure – the Quality score rose from 31 to 57, Growth from 51 to 57, and Opportunity from 7 to 13, while gross margin improved from 29.9% to 34.6% and return on equity, still negative, narrowed from -57.1% to -43.8%. Free-cash-flow yield ticked from -0.1% to 0.4%, and revenue growth stayed triple-digit but decelerated from 198.9% to 185.3%. The company is still deeply unprofitable, with an operating margin of -546.2%, so the change reflects a move off the bottom of the scale, not a clean bill of health.

Quality / Growth / Opportunity scored 0-100. Ranked by the model’s overall conviction (RecScore).

With more than half the watchlist now sitting on Hold (107 of 183 names), the near-term question is less about business quality and more about whether prices give new money a reasonable entry. We will keep watching whether any of this week’s Hold-rated leaders pull back far enough to change the math.
